Nigeria celebrated her 2020 World Ozone Day with the following commemorative activities:
•    A  Ministerial 2020 Ozone Day Address held on 18th September, 2020 in Abuja, Nigeria where Participants were mainly members of the press for awareness dissemination purpose. Followed by the Welcome Address from the Permanent Secretary to the Federal Ministry of Environment Abuja. Also, Goodwill message was entertained from the Representative of UNIDO, who highlighted how the Organization had partnered with the Federal Ministry of Environment in ensuring the implementation of the ODS Phase-out programmes in Nigeria. He further assured of the UNIDO’s continuous support to the Government towards implementing MP’s activities in Nigeria.
•    Also, Awareness materials provided by UNDP to be given to key Stakeholders were distributed to the attendees in line with the COVID-19 guidelines of the government.

The celebration of the 2018 International Day for the preservation and protection of the Ozone Layer in collaboration with the Implementing Agencies (UNDP & UNIDO). The event also include launching of a Publication on “Implementation of the Montreal Protocol’s Ozone Depleting Substances Phase-out Programme in Nigeria”. Participants cut across key stakeholders such as NAFDAC, Nigeria Customs, NARAP, Organized Private Sector;  Ozone Project Beneficiary Companies such as Vitapur, HPZ, Para-Militaries, Academia,  Government Ministries amongst others.

The Federal Ministry of Environment in collaboration with the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) and the United Nations Industrial Development Organization (UNIDO) organized the celebration of the International Day for the Preservation of the Ozone Layer with the theme “Keep Cool and Carry On”. As part of activities to commemorate the Day, there was Launching of a Publication on Implementation of the Montreal Protocol’s Ozone Depleting Substances Phase out Programme in Nigeria from 1989 to date. The event was held on the 18th October, 2018 at Chelsea Hotel, Plot 123, Cadastral Zone AO, Central Business District, Abuja.Go on, start editing...
In attendance were the Honourable Minister of State for Environment, Ibrahim Usman Jibril, Permanent Secretary (Federal Ministry of Environment), Representatives from Implementing Agencies of the HPMP in Nigeria (UNDP & UNIDO), World Health Organization, National Agency for Food and Drugs Administration & Control (NAFDAC), Chiefs of Army and Naval Staff, Nigeria Custom Service (NCS), secondary school students who are beneficiaries of the Ministry’s Ozone Outreach Programme, beneficiary companies from HPMP project and a host of participants from Organized Private Sector and critical stakeholders in the Environment Sector. About two hundred (200) participants attended the event.

The event commenced with recitation of the National Anthem followed by welcome address by the Permanent Secretary (PS), Federal Ministry of Environment, Mr. Leon Lawrence Aliboh who talked about the Montreal Protocol’s ODS phase out project and the current implementation activities in the country. He said the main event of the 2018 international ozone day Celebration is to launch a publication on the implementation of Montreal Protocols ODS phase out Programme in order to showcase Nigeria’s achievements and success story in her efforts to phase out ODS in all sectors of the economy.

A documentary on Ozone Layer Protection and the Montreal Protocol, theme and 2018 Ozone Day message by UNEP Executive Director was aired to sensitize participants on the importance of the Ozone Layer, dangers of Ozone Layer depletion and International efforts towards the phase out of ODSs.

Goodwill Messages were delivered by Representatives from UNDP, UNIDO, WHO, Nigerian Customs, Chemical Regulatory Agencies, Benefitted Companies under the HPMP, Schools that benefitted from the MP’s Ozone Outreach Programme, Army, Navy and Police.

In continuation of the event, the Honourable Minister of State, Ibrahim Usman Jibril delivered the Ozone Day Address. He mentioned the activities and efforts of the Ministry in implementation of the MP HPMP project. He said the Stage II of the project was approved by the MLF at the 81st MLF ExCom and will focus on the servicing sector with some activities in the manufacturing sector. He thanked stakeholders of the HPMP for their fruitful collaboration with the Ministry and urged them to continue to partner with the Ministry in its efforts towards implementation of the MP’s ODS phase out programme in the country.

After the Minister’s speech, was launching of a Publication on Implementation of the Montreal Protocol’s Ozone ODS’s Phase-Out Programme in Nigeria from 1989 to date.

Vote of thanks was given by The Director, Pollution Control & Environmental Health department, FMENV, Mr. Charles Ikeah who thanked all stakeholders and other participants present after which participants took their launch and the event came to an end.
